Hey Book Lovers! I have an exciting book to share with you! I finished it days ago and really fell into the world that the author created. The book is categorized as Fantasy and I have to say I do not read a lot of genre. I seem to enjoy them when I do read them but I generally don’t gravitate to them. So…even if you don’t like fantasy I do suggest you check out this book.
Defiance by C. J. Redwine is rich postapocalyptic YA fantasy perfect for fans of Graceling and Tamora Pierce.
While the other girls in the walled city-state of Baalboden learn to sew and dance, Rachel Adams learns to track and hunt. While they bend like reeds to the will of their male Protectors, she uses hers for sparring practice.
When Rachel’s father fails to return from a courier mission and is declared dead, the city’s brutal Commander assigns Rachel a new Protector: her father’s apprentice, Logan–the boy she declared her love to and who turned her down two years before. Left with nothing but fierce belief in her father’s survival, Rachel decides to escape and find him herself.
As Rachel and Logan battle their way through the Wasteland, stalked by a monster that can’t be killed and an army of assassins out for blood, they discover romance, heartbreak, and a truth that will incite a war decades in the making. – Off of GoodReads
Where to start? From the first page I was hooked and pulled into this book, I loved the strong female character, she was a bit short sighted but they cannot be perfect from the start otherwise we get no growth. As I stated above you don’t need to love the fantasy genre to read this book. The world is a little dystopian but with futuristic elements, that did keep things interesting. Sorta Robin Hood but with kick butt gadgets.
The characters were very strong. Even though we didn’t get any real flashbacks or pages of back history I felt like I knew this cast of characters and their pain. You got a strong sense of them from the moment they arrived; it did help that we got both Rachel’s & Logan’s POV throughout the story. Still I am impressed that Redwine managed to create such potent characters, especially as this is her debut novel.
Something that makes me really happy is that the ending…ended. I cannot stand when you start to read a series and it is cliff-hanger after cliff-hanger. It is as though the author hates us, where as this I felt settled, I wanted more and cannot wait to read the next book (Deception) but I am not cursing my luck at having to wait. I don’t think cliff-hangers necessarily make me go out and get the next book pre-order style. But enough about that. The rest of the plot was good, it was fast paced and every time I thought something was going to happen it didn’t. Redwine kept things so interesting and going and I loved it! It was full of unpredictable moments and plot ploys that kept the journey captivating.
All around, great read! Can’t wait to read the next book and if you are looking for a strong character with a kick butt female lead than go snatch this up. Plus, there is tree jumping, which is very exciting and makes me want to find a huge forest where the branches are strong and limbs are close enough to actually jump from one to the other.
