July Book Favorites

This was actually a really hard pick. In total this month I read over 20 books. So I had a lot to choose from and it came down to 2 books but considering I went out to grab all the books to this series that are available and then read them in the span of a day and a half that pushed it to win. A little OCD-ish perhaps but they were SO good.

12578077 Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout

Series: Lux Series

Title: Obsidian

Summary: Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring…. until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something…unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don’t kill him first, that is. – GoodReads

Here is the thing about summaries, sometimes you read a book and it is PERFECT for the book, it does it justice and it is awesome; other times the summary does not do the book justice. In this case I think the summary does not do the book justice. The book is WAY better and the series is AWESOME!

Normally I am not a big Science Fiction person but the cover won me over along with the rating and reviews over on GoodReads so I had to give it a go; and I am so glad I did.

“And this is why you don’t want me to be friends with Dee, because you were afraid that I’d find out the truth?”
“That, and you’re a human. Humans are weak. They bring us nothing but trouble.”
My eyes narrowed. “We aren’t weak. And you’re on our planet. How about a little respect, buddy.”
Amusement flickered in his emerald eyes. “Point taken.”

The book was full of wittiness and quick puns and sarcasm, all things I enjoy and the fact that it fit so well with the characters only made it more enjoyable. The bantering between Katy and all the characters was so refreshing. She was quirky and unique but for me at least it did not feel like a ploy or a copy cat. Katy is definitely a character I would want to be friends with.

The plot itself was fast moving but not to the point where you feel like it is being rushed. Enough is going on that you are engaged and wanting more (hence me getting all the books and reading them straight through, sorry sleep I had to do it). And even the whole alien angle I sort of loved. It was refreshing from the whole vampire or werewolf that has flooded the shelves and I thought Armentrout did it in an excellent way.

As for romance, can I just say it was crazy refreshing reading a book where the lead female was not going to fall for the jerk face hottie. It endeared her to me even more. She could acknowledge it was a cutie but was not willing to put up with his crap.

All around I loved this book and the rest of the series. Highly recommend you go snap this one up! All 3 books are available at the Edmonton library and the 4th book is coming out in August. According to EPL, they don’t have the 4th on order so I may have to break my policy of buying books (I’ll buy ebooks but try to stay clear or paperbooks) cause I need it and I needed it last week!
